Left Brain/Right Brain Costume

When I found out my sister would be traveling home from Ireland for Halloween this year, I was so excited and immediately started brainstorming sister costumes we could wear together! I was trying to come up with something original, yet something that aligned with our interests. And that’s when I thought of this idea!

My sister is a psychologist and honestly the most intelligent person I know. So, I was trying to think of a “smart” costume that appeal to that side of her personality. And I just kept thinking “my mind is wired completely different from that. I have no idea what we can be.” And that’s when it hit me. We can be “left and right brain”!

Let me explain for those who may not know already (and if you do, bear with me). Our brains are sectioned into two hemispheres: The left brain and the right brain. The theory is that people are either left-brained or right-brained, meaning that one side of their brain is dominant. If you’re mostly analytical and methodical in your thinking, you’re said to be left-brained. If you tend to be more creative or artistic, you’re thought to be right-brained. Whereas this is still considered a theory and has not had significant evidence to back up the idea that people can have a “dominant” side of the brain, I thought it would be a perfect representation of the two of us!

Just like everyone else, we both have left and right brain tendencies, but my sister is more left-brain oriented, and I am a little more right-brained, so I thought this costume idea would be perfect for us!

Left Brain

For her outfit I wanted to focus on typical left-brain occupations and thinking! So, I got her a lab coat and had her dressed in simple white clothes. In her thought bubble, she has lots of equations, measurements and all things to do with logic and linear thinking.

Right Brain

For my right-brain costume, I tried to channel my inner Miss Frizzle! I mixed bright, colorful patterns and made my whole look a little “messy” to imply a scattered brain. In my bubble I included music, art and all things creative and imaginative.

I am so happy I came up with this costume for us and I think it’s pretty darn creative! If my right-brain self must say 😉

What do you think? Or should I say, how do you think?! Are you more left-brained or right-brained?
