DIY Ice Cream Cone Costume

Want a simple DIY costume that is SUPER sweet and universally recognized?! Then this is the perfect costume for you!

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!!! It’s no secret, our family has a sweet tooth! I mean, did you see our daughters’ birthday party?! This costume is right on brand!

Fun Fact: This costume idea was actually not even on my list of costumes I wanted to make this year! I collect kitschy decor, and I was looking at one at my ice cream stool I own, and thought, that would be a fun costume! It was so simple to make that I was able to put it all together in just a couple of hours!

ICE CREAM COSTUME DIY

SUPPLIES:

  • LARGE CARDBOARD BOX
  • HEADBAND
  • SOLID COLORED TOP (you can do white for vanilla, pink for strawberry, brown for chocolate, etc.)
  • FOAM BALL (6 or 8 in)
  • PIPE CLEANER (green, red or brown works best!)
  • ACRYLIC PAINT (red and a light taupe)
  • HOT GLUE GUN/STICKS
  • SCISSORS/BOX CUTTER
  • MULTICOLOR PAPER/FELT
  • DUCT TAPE

HOW TO:

CHERRY HEADPIECE
1.) Paint your foam ball red. To make the cherry appear more “life-like”, I also pushed in a little bit on one side. This gave it the indentation that cherries naturally have around the stem. This is totally optional, but I think adds a little more character!
2.) Next you can add the “stem”! Just take your pipe cleaner and push through the the top of the cherry. If you made the indentation like I did, place the stem in the middle of that.
3.) Finally, you will hot glue your cherry to the headband! Place it however you’d like!

ICE CREAM TOP
1.) The top is super simple! All you have to do is cut out sprinkles and then hot glue them onto the shirt!
I used colored hard stock paper for my sprinkles, but you could use felt or any other material like that if you’d like! For my sprinkles, I used my Cricut machine to get uniform sizes and shapes, but you can absolutely cut each sprinkle by hand with your scissors. Finally, like I mentioned, hot glue the sprinkles onto the top. I laid out my sprinkles ahead of time to make sure I liked where each one was positioned, and then glued them on once I was happy with how it looked.

CONE
1.) Find a flat cardboard box piece that will be large enough to fit around the circumference of your body. You may have piece together several boxes to do so.
2.) Once you have a flat cardboard piece big enough, you are going to paint on your grid design. I measured out how far apart I wanted each line (I did 4 in), sketched it onto the cardboard with a pencil, and then painted over my pencil lines with my light taupe acrylic paint. After the grid was dry, I went in with a brown sharpie and drew on “shadow lines” along the grid to give it a little more dimension. (see in pics above)
3.) Next we are going to make the “banding” across the top of the cone. You will need to find or piece together another cardboard piece that can fit around the circumference of the cone base. This banding will not need to be as wide as the cone itself, it will just have to be about 1/4th the width. Use your hot glue gun and glue the banding onto the the top of the flat cardboard. I decided to paint a line on the top and bottom of the banding with the same light taupe paint to give it a little more dimension as well.
4.) Roll up your flat cardboard into a cylinder/cone shape that will fit around your body. Once both side of the cone are touching, use some hot glue to adhere the pieces together. I also added a little duct tape onto the inside of the cone to provide extra support. Now you have a perfectly formed ice cream cone!

The cherry headpiece is truly the cherry on top! Such a simple DIY, but super versatile too! Maybe I will keep it for another costume next year! Cupcake? Cake? Either way, it is just the sweetest!

Do you find this ice cream costume as sweet as I do?? Stick around to see what costume I make next!
